It is believed to have been built between 550 and 540 BC. and is the oldest of the three temples of Paestum. For a long time it was considered a Roman basilica. In reality, the temple was dedicated to Hera, wife of Zeus and principal deity of the polis, as shown by the ex voto found. Public celebrations took place on the large altar placed in front of the temple.
