The temple dedicated to Athena was built towards the end of the VI century BC In the 18th century the first visitors to the recently rediscovered ruins held the temple dedicated to Ceres but the discovery of a substantial number of votive offerings dedicated to the goddess Athena allowed to correct the erroneous attribution.
Between the seventh and eighth centuries A.D. the temple was transformed into a church and then fell into neglect it was even used as a stable.
